At the time, he could have had no idea that this art form, which he was largely inventing, would go on to become one of the best-loved genres of entertainment the world over. He also evidently knew how to put on one heck of a good party. In the company of around ten thousand guests, he staged a five-hour ballet that didn’t even get started until ten o’clock in the evening. Some historians argue that ballet was already in existence in Renaissance Italy prior to 1581. After all, high-society weddings of the time regularly featured dancers, accompanied by resident court musicians.

As the symphony developed, it created a musical genre in which boundaries could be pushed in remarkable ways. One of the most exciting examples of this is Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 – nicknamed the ‘Symphony of a Thousand’, although not by the composer himself. What Mahler did say, however, was that in writing this work he wanted to create ‘a new symphonic universe’. He most certainly achieved this goal. The forces Mahler used were on a scale unlike any ever seen before: a huge orchestra, including four bassoons, two contra-bassoons, an enormous percussion section and an entirely separate trumpet ensemble.

It had been commissioned by Catherine de’ Medici (at that time the Queen of France) as part of the celebrations for a royal wedding; the man who staged it went by the wonderfully florid name of Balthasar de Beaujoyeulx.
