Deep Song, pp. 67, 73) There are moments, in Romancero gitano, of direct homage to Góngora, as when a boy bathes in a stream (buey de agua; literally ‘water-ox’) at night, wading in the reflection of the crescent moon: POETRY 29 Los densos bueyes del agua embisten a los muchachos que se bañan en las lunas de sus cuernos ondulados [Dense oxen of water charge at the boys bathing in the moons of their rippling horns] (Collected Poems, pp. 588–9) The same shimmering moonlight appears in the most famous of the ballads, ‘Romance sonámbulo’ [Sleepwalking Ballad], where a body floats in a cistern: Un carambano de luna la sostiene sobre el agua.

Two ‘waltzes’ in Poeta en Nueva York [Poet in New York] evoke Vienna, and Diván del Tamarit, the great classical collections of Arabic verse forms like the casida and the ghazal. Two of Lorca’s books – Poema del cante jondo and Romancero gitano [Gypsy Ballads] – are described by the poet as retablos, meaning a reredos or carved altarpiece.
